Volunteers Clean Iconic Zakynthos Beach, Celebrate by Dancing The Zorba (video)
Dozens of volunteers gathered to clean iconic Navagio Beach and its seabed on the island of Zakynthos on Sunday — and in true Greek spirit, they celebrated their efforts with a dance to the world-famous music of “Zorba the Greek.”
It was the second time that the volunteer team of divers calling themselves “We Dive, We Clean” came to Zakynthos from Athens and cleared the area of trash in collaboration local environmental and diving groups.
Navagio, or “Shipwreck,” Beach is located in a secluded cove, surrounded on three sides by towering white cliffs. Its stunningly beautiful turquoise waters mesmerize the eyes of all who have ever seen this idyllic spot.
Another picturesque touch to the beach, of course, is its historic shipwreck, which lies in repose right in the middle of this stretch of perfectly white sand.
The remote beach received its new name in October of 1980, when a huge storm forced the ship “Panagiotis” to run aground there. Prior to that time, the beach had historically been known as “Agios Georgios.”
